At HanaHaus, the air is charged – and not just with Wi-Fi and espresso. We are a home for inspiration and ideas shaped by the people who use our space. Each of our locations is designed to encourage community, connection and creativity.

Hasso Plattner's Vision

HanaHaus is the brainchild of Dr. Hasso Plattner, co-founder of the global enterprise software company SAP. He wanted to create a space where people can connect, explore new ideas, and bring them to life.

Together with team members of the SAP Innovation Center, Hasso drafted an initial concept for the space on a whiteboard in his office in Palo Alto. His main ideas were:

  • Establish a flexible coworking experience and be the best coffee shop in town.

  • Offer science and technology events for the ecosystem.

  • Design the space for the community, where people would naturally want to hang out.

Our goal is to create a sense of community and climate that actively promotes creativity, exchange and cooperation. These are essential requirements to discover new ideas and to advance them.
— Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Hasso Plattner, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SAP

The name HanaHaus is a combination of the name of the in-memory platform SAP HANA and the German word “Haus”, reflecting the functionalist Bauhaus art school which was established in Germany in the 1920s.

Although HanaHaus is an extension of SAP’s innovation ecosystem, the space is not branded with SAP and is open to everyone in the community. From startups, to students, to freelancers, and everyone in between, HanaHaus is ideal for those that are not interested in a membership-based workspace model.

Together with Blue Bottle Coffee

When defining the vision for HanaHaus, we took inspiration from the concept of European coffeehouses that originated in the 17th and 18th centuries. In order to recreate this atmosphere, we searched for a partner that would help bring our vision to life.

We wanted to provide a first-class coffee experience and fortunately, we found the perfect partner in Blue Bottle Coffee. Blue Bottle’s premier brand image and excellent selection of craft coffee aligned very well with the story we wanted HanaHaus to tell.

Founded in Oakland in 2002 by CEO, James Freeman, Blue Bottle was just a small venture-backed coffee startup in the Valley. In 2017, it was sold to the largest food and beverage maker in the world, Nestlé.

History of Our Locations

HanaHaus Palo Alto

HanaHaus Palo Alto

In 2015, the first HanaHaus opened inside the historic Varsity Theater in Downtown Palo Alto. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the building was perfect combination of history and community – an old 1920s art deco movie theater with more than 14,000 sqft of space. After some years of vacancy, HanaHaus transformed the landmark building into a modernized co-working space and café, seeking to foster the same spirit of innovation, connection and creativity that has percolated in the Valley for the last 50 years– attracting the innovators of today, who will define the technology of tomorrow.

HanaHaus Newport Beach

HanaHaus Newport Beach

In 2019, HanaHaus launched its second location in Orange County, CA, combining the laid-back vibe of the seaside life with the aspirations of a growing technology ecosystem, and the talent from SoCal’s top-tier academic and research institutions.

HanaHaus Newport Beach is located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego and uniquely positioned to be a hub for the growing Southern California community of innovators and entrepreneurs. A complete renovation of an iconic midcentury modern office building from the 1950s in the heart of the Lido Marina Village overlooking the Newport Harbor.
